How to Set Up a Business Twitter Page

With over 300 million monthly active users, Twitter can be a very effective channel for marketing your company. That being said, setting up a business Twitter page is not right for all businesses, so make sure that your target market is on Twitter. Talk and survey your current clients to figure out if they are active on Twitter. If not, a business Twitter page may not be right for your business.

With that out of the way, let’s assume that you have done the research and concluded that Twitter could be effective in reaching your desired audience. Great! Actually, setting up the account is easy, but having it successfully achieve the goals you have for it (whatever those goals may be) is more difficult.

There are many “experts” out there saying thousands of different things, but we have compiled a list of a few initial tips for getting your business Twitter page off to a good start.

Your Twitter Name Should Resonate

One of the first decisions you will have to make when setting up your account is your business Twitter page name. It is crucial that you have your handle be an exact match of your business name in order to be easily found. There is some flexibility, however. For example, adding identifiers after your name like “Inc.” or “CPA” can be useful if your initial attempts were taken.

Whatever your decision, make sure that it resonates with your business name and brand. If potential followers can’t find you, then growing a following becomes next to impossible.

Use Quality Images

The banner and profile images on a business Twitter page are where most companies fall short. They have a blurry logo as a profile picture and a completely unrelated banner image. Images catch visitors’ attention, so they are the first impression of your business Twitter page.

I can hear you thinking, “Well, I can make my logo clear for the profile picture, but what should I put for my banner image?”. Good question, and I would say make it one of 3 things: your product, your building, or your team. There are other options that would be perfectly acceptable, but picking one of these options is a good place to start. Just ensure it is a high-resolution and professional photo that accurately reflects your brand. Remember, visuals are important.

Write an Interesting Bio

Your biography is where visitors look when they want to learn more about your business. They often do this before they visit your site, so make sure that your biography does each of the following:

  1. Introduces your product/service
  2. Points out how your company stands out
  3. Call-to-action

Giving this information to those visiting your business Twitter page will give them all the information they need to continue on to your website where the real action happens.

Use Your Best Link

Obviously, you need to include your website link in your business Twitter page. Many would assume, however, that the link must be your homepage. This is not the case. If you are using the Twitter page to increase sales through your online shopping platform, then the best place to link to would be the shopping portion of your site. You want to take away as many steps as possible between reaching them on Twitter and them becoming your customers.

There are many other more advanced tips that you can find, but following these is a great place to start. Make sure you have a good Twitter handle, quality images, an attention-grabbing bio, and the appropriate link. Once you have that, start posting!
