Should My Business Be Using Linkedin?

You’ve been on the site for years, but now you’re wondering: should you be doing more with LinkedIn for your business? The answer is yes, but what that actually is depends on many factors.

Have a Company Page

Many people ask us if they should have a company page. Yes, you should – and you should make every effort to post content to this page regularly. This page should be accurate with your services and company information that would allow someone who is potentially looking at you to see what type of company you work for. I hope LinkedIn brings back some of the services and other tabs they had for business pages, but for now, make it a good placement of your best content.

Get Involved in the Community

One of the most impactful things you can do on social media is interact. Many times we think of social media as a broadcast platform, but it’s not – at least, it’s not meant to be. It’s a social platform.

Great – but what does that mean?

Well, it means opening up conversation, not just pushing your opinion. Start conversations, even though sometimes, as anyone who has experienced leadership knows, your conversation starters come back empty.

Even if you come back empty a few times, the point remains: you need to focus on social interactions by contributing to the discussions that exist in the groups.

You might even want to start your own group to focus discussions around topics you share some expertise in. But the key shift is to think of LinkedIn as a conversation in a room, not as a bull horn on a soap box.

Post Content

LinkedIn has allowed people to post content for a while now, and it’s becoming a bit of an eye sore on some pages. I recommend posting to LinkedIn, but do it with your best content. Post in alignment with your company’s core target and audience. Be sure that what you post about is within your service offering and displays your expertise. Share what you know, what you’ve learned, and what your potential clients want to know. Sharing this information will establish you in your industry and provide you with an edge in future conversations.

Keep Connections Real

The trend right now with many LinkedIn consultants is to connect with as many people as you can. While that might work on paper, the hopes for this professional site is that the connections remain professional. I’d recommend making sure that you have a good network first. Connect if you know the person or if you have a mutual connection, before reaching out at random. An introduction is always the best way to go.
